All about Golf Trolley Batteries (Lithium, 18/36 holes and maintenance)

Read everything you need to know about golf trolley batteries in this blog from Golftrolley123.com

With electric golf trolleys, the battery is the most important component. The lifespan, power, and reliability of your trolley depend entirely on the quality of the battery. Therefore, it's wise to know what types of batteries are available, how long they last, and how best to maintain them.

1. What types of golf trolley batteries are there?

Today there are two types:

1. Lithium (LiFePO4 or Lithium-Ion) – the modern standard
  • Light in weight
  • Lasts much longer
  • Reliable power (no loss of power during the round)
  • Charge faster
  • Lifespan up to 1,000 charge cycles

Lithium batteries can be found in brands such as:
PowaKaddy (Plug'n'Play 30V), JuCad, JuStar, Axglo, At-Hena, Fastfold Electric, Wishbone Electric.

2. Lead-acid battery (outdated, hardly used anymore)
  • Heavier
  • Slower loading
  • Shorter lifespan
  • Sensitive to deep discharge

Nearly all modern electric trolleys have switched completely to lithium batteries , and for good reason: they are more powerful, lighter, and last much longer.

2. What is the difference between 18-hole and 36-hole batteries?

At Golftrolley123.com you will mainly see these indications:

18-hole battery (standard)
  • Suitable for one round of 18 holes
  • Ideal for the recreational player who plays 1-2 times a week

36-hole battery (long-range)
  • For golfers who play multiple rounds in one day
  • Ideal for tournaments, holidays or court staff
  • Recommended for hilly courses or heavy bags

Important:
A 36-hole battery doesn't deliver twice the power, but more capacity, meaning the battery discharges less deeply and therefore lasts longer per year and has a longer lifespan.

3. How long does a golf trolley battery last? (lifespan)

A lithium golf trolley battery lasts on average:

▶ 5 to 7 years with normal use

Sometimes even longer with proper maintenance.

The lifespan depends on:
  • number of charging cycles
  • how deeply the battery is discharged
  • storage temperature
  • quality of the charger
  • how often the trolley is used

Rule of thumb:
A battery wears out mainly over time, not over mileage.

4. How do you know if a golf trolley battery needs replacing?

Watch out for these signs:
  • the trolley doesn't make it to 18 holes anymore
  • he suddenly loses power on the last holes
  • charging cycle takes longer than normal
  • battery gets unusually warm
  • the trolley falters on slopes

When in doubt : better to replace than to load the engine.

5. How do you correctly charge a golf trolley battery?

✔ Charge immediately after golfing
Don't wait until it's completely empty. Lithium batteries thrive in partial discharge.

✔ Always use the original charger
Avoid universal chargers — they can damage cells.

✔ Charge to 100%, but don't leave it on the charger for days
After fully charging → unplug.

✔ Place the battery in a dry, room temperature location
Avoid cold and moisture.
6. Maintenance and storage of your golf trolley battery

1. Winter storage (important!)
  • the battery is approximately 60–70% charged
  • Store it in a dry place between 10°C and 20°C
  • Charge it for a few minutes once every 6 weeks

2. Avoid complete discharge
Lithium batteries can become damaged if they are completely discharged.

3. Avoid extreme cold or heat
  • Below 0°C = poorer performance
  • Above 40°C = cells can wear out

4. Keep the connections clean
Dirt or sand on the contacts can cause power loss.

7. What is the difference between 24V, 30V and 36V systems?
  • 24V batteries
    Many older electric trolleys.

  • 30V batteries (such as PowaKaddy Plug'n'Play)
Faster, more powerful, better hill assist.

  • 36V batteries
Often used in premium models with follow-me functions.

More voltage = more powerful motor, but also more efficiency.

8. Batteries by brand – what is good to know?

PowaKaddy – Plug 'n' Play Lithium
  • No cables
  • Direct insertion
  • 18 of 36 holes
  • Faster loading time
  • Very reliable

JuCad / JuStar
  • Lightweight lithium
  • Handmade
  • Very long lifespan
  • Compact loading blocks

Axglo / Fastfold / At-Hena
  • High capacity
  • Affordable lithium solutions
  • Powerful enough for hills
9. Frequently asked questions about golf trolley batteries

Does a lithium battery really last longer than lead?
Yes, on average 2–3x longer.

Can I use an 18-hole battery for 36 holes?
Preferably not → wear increases.

Can I take a lithium battery on a plane?
Often below 100Wh yes, above that no → always check with airline.

Can a battery be left in the rain?
Yes, but the connection must remain clean and dry.
